Before you download this PDF, you should know that several key factors have prompted this Market Radar:

  1. There have been several changes to the higher education landscape that have altered the requirements, that is, the march toward greater student centricity demanding that tracking engagement is as important as recording transactions and results, as well as a greater focus on accommodating nontraditional students who are interested in flexible timetables and learning pathways.
  2. Many student information systems (SIS) vendors have introduced advanced analytics and AI capabilities, uplifting capability.
  3. Innovation software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings have appeared, marking a shift in how systems are managed.

As a result, we arrived at the start of 2019 with a substantially different SIS marketplace five years ago.

This review has two distinct groups of products: mature, feature-rich, traditional offerings, and newcomers with cloud-native architecture and user interfaces, and rapidly evolving features. A few vendors are also taking the approach of delivering new functionality using cloud-native modules that offer a modern user experience integrated into a traditional system core.

SIS functionality is either provided as a standalone or as part of an integrated campus suite, commonly extending to recruitment, student support, career development, and alumni relationship management in the student domain or providing more comprehensive campus and enterprise management (ERP) features. Institutions considering their SIS options should choose one of two paths:

1) A new entrant with sufficient functionality to meet their core needs and a feature roadmap that aligns with the institution’s strategic agenda, supplemented where needed with best-of-breed applications

2) A more mature product with a clear strategy to deliver core functionality that aligns with the institution’s plan, a refreshed user experience, and a strategy underway for modernizing their system architecture and hosting models.

Assess these two options against the vendor’s track record of delivering on their roadmap promises and professional services’ availability to support implementation.
