NZ Ministry of Education boosts cybersecurity across schools with Proofpoint, safeguarding against modern email threats. Learn more here.

In New Zealand, safeguarding the digital communications of students, teachers, and staff is a top priority. With each school operating under its own locally elected board, ensuring cybersecurity across the nation’s primary and secondary schools requires a unified approach. Recognizing the increasing sophistication of email threats, the New Zealand Ministry of Education took a proactive step to standardize cybersecurity measures nationwide.

“A few years ago, there was a fairly major cybersecurity breach in New Zealand with one of our district health boards,” said Andrew Hood, chief advisor of cybersecurity at the New Zealand Ministry of Education. “So we were asked what we could do to improve the cybersecurity maturity of New Zealand schools.”

To protect against email-based threats, the Ministry chose Proofpoint, a leading cybersecurity platform. This solution provides robust protection for schools using both Google Workspace Plus and Microsoft 365, which are commonly adopted across the nation. The Ministry handles the licensing, allowing individual schools to configure their specific needs within the secure environment provided by Proofpoint.
