2024 Healthcare Cyberattack Insights & Data

Healthcare facilities’ cyberattacks have increased and it has threatened the care for patients. The yearly Ponemon report, now in its third year, indicates worrying trends and progress in the healthcare sector against cyberattacks.

Key findings are:

– There was a rise from 88% to 92% in healthcare organizations facing a cyberattack during the last 12 months.
Average cost of the costliest attack surged to $4.7 million.

  • While 57% say AI enhances security, 63% are concerned about protection of sensitive data.
  • 71% of organizations conduct security awareness training, 6 percentage points up from 2023.
  • 61% indicate that text messaging is the most attacked collaboration tool.
  • Employee carelessness was cited by 31% as the cause of data loss, and 52% are highly concerned about human error.

These findings highlight the sense of urgency for health care organizations to enhance their ability to protect their organizations through cyber security measures and in educating the staff on how to reduce risks.
