The inaugural 2024 Data Loss Landscape report highlights a crucial insight: data loss is primarily a people problem. Based on a global survey of 600 security practitioners and data from the Proofpoint Information Protection platform, the report reveals that most data loss incidents are caused by human error. Over 70% of respondents cited “careless users” as a primary cause, while fewer than 50% attributed incidents to technical issues. Alarmingly, a small group of users—just 1%—account for 90% of DLP alerts, and 33% of users send about two misdirected emails annually.
The report also notes that generative AI alerts have quickly become one of the top five most-implemented rules, despite being introduced only this year. Initially driven by regulatory compliance, DLP now focuses on protecting a broader range of data categories.
